Where should I go for NYE in Australia?

I are from Sydney and want to go on a road trip somewhere for a NYE holiday. Preferably somewhere that has a great beach on the East Coast and a rockin' NYE party! I was thinking Byron Bay, but accommodation is going to be too expensive (ie $300 a night).... Can anyone suggest somewhere they have been before?
