Does colic end at 3 months of age or 3 months after it starts?

I have a 2 1/2 month old son that about 3 weeks ago started the dreadful colicky crying and nothing I have tried has worked and everything I have read about colic says it usually stops at 3 months but what I am wondering does it mean 3 months after it begins or 3 months of age
